How I Prepare For A Headshot Session As A Photographer
As a family, portrait, and personal branding photographer, I often find myself wearing many hats throughout my working day. Among these various roles, one of the most frequent and specialized tasks I undertake is the preparation for a headshot session. I have often been asked about my preparation process, so today I thought I'd shed some light on my methodology.
Research and Understanding the Client’s Brand
Each client is unique, and it's crucial to understand their needs, vision, and the image they wish to project. I spend time researching their work, company culture, and personal style to capture a headshot that effectively communicates their brand. I will also schedule a planning and styling consultation video or phone call in advance of the shoot to better understand my client’s vision and desired outcome.
Choosing the Right Gear
While my primary tool is my camera, I ensure that I have an appropriate lens for the job. Typically, a 50mm or a 100mm prime lens is my go-to as it provides a flattering perspective. Additionally, I make sure my lighting equipment is in order; whether it's natural light or studio light, each creates a different mood.
Location Scouting
Depending on the client's preference, the shoot can be at a rented studio, their office, an outdoor location, or a mix of each so the client has variety. Each location has its advantages, so it's all about matching the right environment with the client's brand.
Creating a Comfortable Environment
Headshot photography can often be an intimidating experience for the client. It’s my job to create an environment where they feel comfortable. I make sure the studio or location is clean and inviting, and always keep the vibe upbeat and positive. Music is a great way to make everyone feel more relaxed and engaged.
Planning the Shoot
Prior to the session, I will have a conversation with the client to discuss outfit choices, makeup, and overall aesthetics. I make sure to prepare some pose ideas that can help my clients feel more at ease and confident in front of the camera.
Backup Plans
Equipment can fail, weather can change, and unexpected incidents can occur. I always have backup gear and alternative plans ready, ensuring that no matter what happens, the shoot goes smoothly.
Pre-shoot Camera Settings
To ensure I get the perfect shot, I prefer to set my camera settings in advance according to the anticipated lighting and environment. This way, I can focus more on directing my client and less on making adjustments to my camera.
The Night Before
On the day before the shoot, I charge all batteries, clear memory cards, clean lenses, and pack my bag. I also ensure that I have a good night's sleep so I can bring my A-game to the shoot.
Arriving Early
On the day of the shoot, I make sure to arrive early. This allows me to set up, double-check everything, and ensure I’m completely ready when the client arrives.
Post-Shoot Preview
After the session, I typically show the client a few shots on the camera screen to give them a quick preview. It's a nice way to end the session on a high note and it helps the client leave feeling confident and excited about the results.
In conclusion, preparation is the key to any successful headshot session. It allows me to be confident, stay flexible, and ultimately capture my clients in their best light. I hope this gives you a little more insight into my process and underscores the passion I have for my work.
